he moved to California just after last November's election. A former college buddy in the area hooked him up with a regional signature-gatherer, and he got a crash course in California politics.
"I feel good about taking this job because I agree with it," Hicks said. "People are saying it's not all his fault," he said of Davis and California's problems. "But isn't he in the position to be blamed for it?"
Some signature-gatherers are working in the state's population centers, the Bay Area and Los Angeles, which lean Democratic. But their days can get bumpy, said Tom Bader, the petition consultant overseeing the signature-gathering effort for Rescue California.
At one Bay Area location this week, Bader said, police were called after agitators pretending to be interested in signing petitions tore one and scribbled profanities on another.
Not everybody at Lowe's on Friday supported the recall. Dozens of shoppers simply walked past Hicks' booth and shook their heads "no."
A retired Republican teacher said Davis was getting a bad rap, that no Republican governor would have better handled an energy crisis spurred by deregulation, or a budget crisis that has also swept most other states.
And Mannie Veal, a retired worker for the federal Department of Energy who is sticking by Davis, muttered, "I ain't signing against nobody."
"There's lots of people like me out there," Veal added. "Just not in Roseville."
